PDI partners with Unocal Foundation on tsunami recovery programs

Story 1: Sustainable Management of Mangrove Resources
               through Local Community Action

Capacity building through community level planning

On May 20, 2005 PDI was awarded a grant of $428,328 from the Unocal Foundation for a three-year project that will enhance Sustainable Management of Mangrove Resources through Local Community Action in selected coastal villages in Phang Nga Province that were devastated by the tsunami. This tsunami recovery initiative will be implemented by the Thailand Environmental Institute (TEI) - PDI's partner in Thailand on environmental issues. Other collaborating agencies include the Population and Community Development Association (PDA) and Yad Fon. Key activities encompass participatory action research on environment-social-economic aspects of mangrove protection, capacity building workshops at local levels for better mangrove ecosystem management, mangrove rehabilitation and replication efforts, and monitoring and evaluation.

Story 2: Post-Tsunami Social, Economic and
               Environmental Reconstruction Project

Working together to rebuild

Also funded by the Unocal Foundation ($432,000 over three years), this project will assist four tsunami-afflicted villages in Phang Nga to launch several self-help activities to improve the standards of living and quality of life of local communities. It will support the restoration of clean drinking water and sanitation facilities, skills training in sustainable environmental and agricultural practices, village banks and micro-credit initiatives to create new livelihoods for affected families, and school lunches, educational scholarships, books and clothing for students. This three-year project will be implemented by the Population and Community Development Association (PDA) - PDI's partner in Thailand on community development and poverty alleviation.
